West Yorkshire Spinners Elements DK: A Review

I’ve made a wonky bag using Elements DK from West Yorkshire Spinners. How would I describe this yarn? Naturally, it’s light and luxurious. Elements DK is a sophisticated yarn in shades inspired by the joyful hues of Summer. This sustainable yarn has been created with the environment in mind and uses a naturally harmonious blend of Falkland Islands wool and Tencel.

Tencel, otherwise known as lyocell, is harvested from sustainably managed wood sources, which are biodegradable and fully compostable. The yarn creates a super soft, breathable fabric with graceful drape and superb sheen, making it a fantastic choice for summer tops, cardigans, and sweaters. Elements DK also enhances lace, colour work, and textures beautifully.

Working with Elements DK

I have to say, I think this is a gorgeous yarn. I was initially curious about lyocell—it didn’t sound very natural—but I looked into it. It’s often made with eucalyptus tree pulp, a by-product from the manufacturing process when using eucalyptus wood, but it can be other woods as well.

It absolutely glides on my hook.

Colour Choices for the “Wonky Bag”

Interestingly, they call it a ‘summer yarn,’ but I made what I think is an alternative Christmas-themed bag. I chose the following shades:

  • Oyster Pearl (An off-white, reminding me of snow)
  • Ocean Spray (Blue)
  • Sweet Nectar (Gold/Yellow)
  • Caribbean Coral Reef (Red)
  • Olive Grove (Green)

The combination of the blue and the off-white/silver represents the cold and frost, while the gold, red, and green are classic Christmas colours.

Cost and Project Plans

To my absolute delight—because this isn’t the cheapest yarn—I bought it at the wonderful Hive in Risca, a local, independent yarn and haberdashery shop (it’s marvellous in there, I love it). I can’t remember exactly what I paid, but I’ll estimate around £5 a ball.

ItemCost Estimate
Cost per ball~£5.00
Balls needed for 1 bag6
Total Cost for 6 balls~£30.00
Bags possible from 6 balls2 comfortably

I’ve made one bag, and I’m going to make another but switch the colours up, as changing the colours around gives you a totally different look. I originally planned to use the remainder for Christmas decorations, but now that I realize I can get a second bag and still have a bit left over, I might do that instead.

Could also use just 3 colours and have a lovely bag for £15.

Final Verdict

The yarn is so lovely to work with and incredibly soft.

Controversial opinion alert: I’m not a massive fan of crochet clothing for myself personally. I find it doesn’t really fit my ‘thick-set’ figure well; a lot of crochet stuff seems made for a more delicate figure, and I never get the fit right. Also, after a few washes, pieces I have made for myself tend to lose their shape. I do admire all the wonderful patterns out there and the amazing things people make for themselves, but it’s just not for me.

All that aside, if you were to treat yourself and make an item of clothing—this yarn is just beautiful. I’m actually rubbing it against my cheek at the moment, and I imagine wearing this would be quite delightful.

In summary, this is the Elements from West Yorkshire Spinners. I love it.
