Blog Post 1 of 4: The Wonky Bag: The Inspiration & The Lean (Intro to the Design)
Hey there, fellow makers and lovers of unique things! Kay here, the heart and hands behind Indie Heart Crochet. I’m absolutely thrilled to be introducing you to my first crochet pattern, one that perfectly encapsulates everything I stand for: The Wonky Bag!
When I first dreamt of designing patterns to share my passion for crochet, I had a clear vision: a project that would be welcoming for absolute beginners, showcasing those foundational stitches every crocheter needs to know. But I also wanted something seasoned crocheters would enjoy, a satisfying make they could return to again and again.
Enter the humble (and infinitely adaptable) granny square! It’s a crochet classic for a reason, and it became the perfect foundation for The Wonky Bag. There’s a timeless charm to the granny square, and its versatility makes it wonderful for adapting into modern, functional pieces.
The Beauty of the Lean: Choose Your Own Adventure
As I learned to crochet, there were so many delightful quirks I discovered along the way – like the natural tendency of crochet stitches to lean. For a long time, I thought this was something to “fix.” But then I realised, what if we just embrace it?
With granny squares, you can overcome this lean by simply turning your work after every round. In the pictures of The Wonky Bag, you’ll see the lean isn’t overt; it’s a small granny, but there is a subtle difference if you choose to turn your work.
So, I invite you to choose your own adventure: turn or not to turn? Wonky or not wonky? Personally, my heart (and my slightly wonky brain!) prefers the natural lean. I just love the look of the stitches when they flow in that organic, imperfectly perfect way. It’s what makes each Wonky Bag truly one-of-a-kind.
This project is also designed to be a quick, satisfying make for those times you need a thoughtful handmade gift in a pinch, or an accessory to match a specific outfit, season, or theme.
