Old Spool, New Sparkle: Turning Vintage Thread into Eco-Friendly Christmas Joy

I’ve had this old thread in one of my boxes for I don’t know how long. I think the spool itself is absolutely beautiful—it’s really solid wood—and the thread, well, I don’t know what you do with it. I’m wondering if it might have come from my Nan’s old box, in which case, it could well be something like sock strengthening thread.

I don’t know. It’s a funny thing. Somebody probably knows what it is straight away, but I love it. And I’ve never used it because I just think it’s such a beautiful thing, and I wouldn’t like it all to go. I’m not much of a one for buying new things; I just like old things. And then I end up not using them, which is just a bit of a shame, isn’t it?

So, it was staring at me the other day and I thought, oh, you know what, just try and make something with it.

A Sustainable Sparkle Project

Thinking ahead, I thought well let’s try and make a Christmas decoration for my tree this year—well, in fact, several! It’s a nice, neutral, natural colour.

Now, I love sparkle and I love glitter, and I am about to buy some Eco glitter, because you can’t really have eco sparkly yarn—I’ve not come across any anyway. If anybody knows of any, I would be interested!

I have come up with a way that I can use up some of my stash, some of which may be nylon, but that’s okay, because it’s either from a charity shop or somebody gave it to me. I haven’t purchased it myself. Making a decoration that isn’t going to end up in landfill is probably more sustainable than it sitting in a bag somewhere doing nothing.

Anyway, I digress. Oh, how unusual for me!

The Plan: Glittered Crochet Decorations

I’m going to make… well, once I’ve sort of worked out the pattern because I didn’t write it down as I went (yep, rookie error!), I’m going to make lots and lots of decorations in different colours and have a go with using a basic glue, a non-chemical based glue, into which I will liberally sprinkle some Eco glitter and then paint it onto the crochet. Wish me luck with the sparkly trial!

I hope you like my spool, anyway. I love it.
