Blog Post 4 of 4: My Wonky Journey: Designing The Wonky Bag (The Story Behind the Stitches)
Welcome back, fellow makers! If you’ve been with me from the start, you’ve explored the core concept of The Wonky Bag in Part 1: The Wonky Bag: The Inspiration & The Lean (Intro to the Design)], delved into its clever construction and customization options in Part 2: The Wonky Bag: Beyond the Basic (Construction & Customization)], and learned about its versatility and the different pattern versions available in Part 3: The Wonky Bag: Your Project, Your Way (Creative Expression & Pattern Versions).
Today, I want to take a moment to share a more personal side of Indie Heart Crochet and the story behind designing our very first pattern, The Wonky Bag.
My Wonky Journey: From Maker to Designer
For years, crochet has been my passion, my quiet revolution, and a source of immense joy. The idea of designing my own patterns and sharing them with a wider community felt like a natural next step, but let me be completely open and honest with you: it has been a very steep learning curve!
This Wonky Bag pattern is my very first design. Every stitch, every word, every diagram in this pattern has been a journey of self-teaching. From figuring out how to articulate instructions clearly for various skill levels to, yes, even teaching myself graphic design software just so I could create the visual charts – it’s all been a process of discovery and persistent effort.
So, when you look at the chart, if you purchase the paid pattern when released, you might notice they’re not “perfect.” And that’s okay! It’s part of the authentic, human touch that runs through everything at Indie Heart Crochet. Just like the charming lean of the Wonky Bag, my design process has been a bit “wonky” too, filled with learning, tweaking, and constantly improving.
Joining Me on the Journey to “Less Wonky”
I am on a journey, and I’m thrilled to share it with you. As my skills improve, as I learn more about pattern writing and graphic design, my future patterns will undoubtedly “get less wonky” in their presentation and precision. But the heart of what I do – celebrating authenticity, creativity, and the joy of making – will always remain.
Your feedback, your makes, and your engagement mean the world to me as I continue to grow this independent venture. Thank you for being here, for embracing the imperfectly perfect, and for allowing me to share my passion with you.
